Prairie Chickens are medium sized with barred brown, tan to white in color, especially on the under parts. Prairie Chickens tail is short and square, dark brown in males, barred brown and tan in females. Prairie Chickens legs are feathered down to the toes, nostrils are hidden by feathers. The pinnae are longer in males. Orange-colored air sacsand eyebrows are conspicuous on males in the spring. Prairie Chickens are about 18" long and weigh about 2 lbs.
